Nolan

The last place I wanted to be after last night was the police station. There was no way I was leaving Ava alone. She sat at my desk while I talked to the captain about what I had discovered in Thunder Pike.

Griffin and I sat in his office with the door closed. This case was growing more sensitive and deadly by the day. The captain had installed sound-proofing windows and walls in his office. It was a hazard of working in a department with amazing shifter hearing. He had to go to extreme lengths to keep information confidential and quiet.

I kept glancing at Ava over my shoulder through the slanted blinds. I swore the woman was glowing. Shifter sex had that effect. We barely got any sleep last night. Instead of dark circles under our eyes we were still fucking energized from an incredible night.

“Bryson,” Cap barked.

“Yes, sir.” I whipped around to face him.

“I read Ms. Lance’s statement about the attack in Thunder Pike.” Cap’s voice boomed.

“And?”

Griffin shuffled his feet. I knew he didn’t like being in the captain’s office without his partner, but ever since Rawlings had been thrown off the case this was how things worked now.

“She’s fucking lucky she survived.”

“She is, sir.” I nodded.

“I need to tell you something about the body.”

Griffin and I zeroed in on our boss.

“Is the autopsy complete, sir?” I asked.

He shook his head. “That’s the thing. There was no autopsy.”

“No autopsy?” I roared. “We need to know what that thing is. How they’re making it.”

The captain shook his head. “When our team arrived on the scene, there was no body, detectives.”

Griffin and I looked at each other.

“That’s impossible. I checked. He was dead. Six bullet holes, sir. It took six fucking bullets to the back.”

“I’m not saying he left there alive. I’m suggesting someone else retrieved the body before us.”

I rubbed the side of my face. “Did the team check the cottage?” I asked.

“It’s been wiped clean,” he reported.

I glanced at Ava. She lifted her hand and waved. She was probably wondering what was taking so damn long.

“Fuck,” I groaned. “What did they take?”

“We’re going to need Ms. Lance to make a list. I need her to go back to the house and tell us exactly what is gone.”

I shook my head. “I don’t know if she’s ready for that, sir.”

Sure, she was living in afterglow bliss right now, but if I took her to Sweet Willow Lane, that could vanish quickly. I didn’t want to do that to her.

“We need to know if the adversary has compromising information. We need to know what they have on her.”

“You want me to take her back to where she was almost killed? No. It’s too soon.”

Griffin cleared his throat. “Why don’t I go too? Up and back.”

He had just lost a partner for getting in too deep with a girl he fell for. I didn’t want that to happen to him again. Would he think differently if he knew Ava was my mate? That I had to do everything in my power to protect her?

“All right.
